About us

Since its launch in 2015, the Smart Cities Mission of the Government of India has helped over 100 cities to improve urban infrastructure and quality of living. The Smart City Mission was designed to provide support for a city’s unique urban ecosystem consisting of socio-economic, environmental and institutional opportunities and challenges. The 100 cities in the Smart City Mission were selected in four rounds, which comprised of an initial state selection round, and then a city-level challenge wherein cities were scored based on the vision and model of development for the city outlined in a proposal.

This all-encompassing mission covers nine key sectors of urban infrastructure including water, waste management, public transportation, electricity, sanitation, heritage and tourism, public spaces, health and sports facilities. Each sector brings the potential for unique impact areas which have been mapped by MoHUA.

The Smart City mission works in tandem with various other ongoing missions, wherein projects are being funded, implemented and governed by other schemes such as AMRUT, PMAY, SBM, Housing for All, NULM and more.
